Often when we hear about voting, we hear about Election Day. However, an important component of the voting process occurs before the actual act of voting—voter registration. Young people have the power to break barriers for their peers trying to engage in the voting process by:
- Encouraging others to register to vote
- Guiding young voters through the registration process
- Serving as a resource for any questions or concerns young voters may have
Below, we offer a guide on how young voters can register people to vote in person, and how to register people to vote digitally.
Learn the Basics
- Learn about your state’s voter registration process and deadlines – Before you can host a voter registration event, you want to make sure that you feel comfortable with your state’s voter registration process and deadlines. Using this guide from the Federal Elections Commission, and visit your State Board of Elections Page to learn about the rules for your state and home districts. Many counties and states will have unique rules, so check before speaking with the members of your community. You might pays special attention to rules associated with:
- New Voters
- New residents to your area
- Those who wish to vote but are unsure if they are allowed.
- Rules to register as an absentee
- Rules of Day of Voting
- Get to know your tools to register – There are many ways to make sure that you and members of your community are registered to vote. Though a myriad of methods, including digital and online registration, as well as printing out registration forms and mailing them in, you can connect individuals with the opportunity to act on their civic power. Each of these methods, however, has its own unique deadlines for participation. Make sure that you are aware of the deadlines for early voting, absentees voting, as well as the rules to register online or in person on election day.

- Create a series of Instagram swipe images in a post – that describes: (1) why people should register to vote, (2) how they can check their voter registration status and (3) how to register to vote.
